Bangalore: The Aam Admi Party (AAP) would decide on forming a government in Delhi only after the people give their verdict, senior party leader Yogendra Yadav said Thursday.

“We will form the government only after the people of Delhi give the verdict and not according to a timeframe set by others,” Yadav told reporters here on his first visit to the city after his party’s dream run in the recent assembly election in the national capital.

Responding to union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s statement in New Delhi earlier in the day that the UPA government would give AAP more time to explore forming a government, Yadav said his party was following the constitutional calendar and its timeframe.

“As we said before, we will first consult people, no matter what anyone’s timeframe is. If the constitutional calendar says we cannot form the government, so be it. At the same time, we will not give in to someone else’s timeframe, as the people’s decision will be final,” he reiterated.

AAP had sought 10 days from Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to decide whether to form its government with an outside support of the Congress, which has only eight lawmakers in the 70-member legislative assembly.

AAP won 28 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) 31 and its ally Akali Dal one.
