New Delhi: “We will perform,” Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal said Sunday, in the first clear indication that his party was ready to form a government in Delhi despite a hung verdict.
Addressing the media, Kejriwal said it was wrong to say that his party was shy of taking power despite being invited by the Lt. Governor after it won 28 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly.
“We will deliver whatever assurances we made in our manifesto. It (the manifesto) was prepared after wide consultations and a lot of thought went into it,” Kejriwal said.
“Moreover, the people of Delhi are expecting much more from us, and we will perform,” he added.
The AAP is engaged in getting a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ from people in the capital on whether or not it should form a government with the legislative support of the Congress, a party it fought against in the elections.
Kejriwal said the party was holding public meetings across the city.
“We will make the declaration tomorrow (Monday) morning only after we get the opinion of the people,” he said.
“This is the first time such a thing is happening in India.
“Earlier, the common man’s role was limited to just voting. But we are going back to them and making them feel empowered,” he added. “We are the talk of the town. This is true democracy.”
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the single largest party in the house with 31 seats, declined to form a government.
The Congress was routed and won only eight seats. It has offered outside support to the AAP.
Kejriwal said if the party did form a government in Delhi, the promised date of Dec 29 to pass the Lokpal bill in Delhi would have to be postponed by a week.
“A lot of time has been lost… If we form government, the date to pass the bill will have to be shifted by around a week. But we will definitely pass it.”
