Speaking during the debate on motion of thanks on the governor’s address to the legislature, DMK member Kovai Chezhiyan spoke about the apex court’s directive to the central government to notify the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s final award.

Intervening, Finance Minister and Leader of House O. Panneerselvam said the DMK has no moral right to speak on the Cauvery river water issue as it has betrayed the interests of the state by not making efforts to get the tribunal’s award notified in the central government gazette.

Provoked by Panneerselvam’s remarks, the DMK members protested. Queering the pitch was Housing Minister R. Vaithilingam who remarked on the choice of portfolios by the DMK in the central government.

The DMK members wanted the remarks to be expunged and also sought permission of Speaker P. Dhanapal to clarify their stand.

On the speaker’s refusal, some DMK members staged a demonstration and the speaker ordered their removal by the marshalls.

Later, speaking to reporters outside the assembly DMK’s M.K. Stalin said the party members were not given chance to speak in the house.
