Kolkata : Elitisim is one of the many issues plaguing the education sector in West Bengal, said Nobel laureate Amartya Sen Saturday.
“There are many issues of different kinds… there is a question of elitisim. We can improve one college. Not others. Why,” Sen said referring to the upgradation of Presidency College into Presidency University.
Sen was in the city to launch a book “Adhipatya O Lokapragna” authored by Kumar Rana, project director of Pratichi Trust of which the celebrated economist is the founder-chairperson.
The book speaks about concerns like hegemony and tradition of keeping the downtrodden away from acquiring education.
The renowned economist and educator suggested establishment of a high-level educational committee to tackle the problems.
“There has to be a high level educational committee to look into it,” said Sen whose next book “An Uncertain Glory: India and its contradictions” will be out in July.
