Kolkata: Banking services are likely to be impacted in West Bengal along with rest of the country with the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an apex body of nine banking associations, calling for a nationwide two-day bank strike from Wednesday.
The strike is in tandem with the 48-hour shutdown called by various central trade unions.
“More than 20,000 bank branches (including rural and cooperative banks) in Bengal are likely to remain closed for two days,” Bikash Deb Roy, general secretary, All India Bank Officers’ Association (AIBOA), told media persons here Monday.
Deb Roy said a majority of the ATMs were expected to remain operational till the time money would be available in them.
“Filling up ATMs with cash is now outsourced by the banks. Accordingly, money would be filled up on Feb 19. ATMs would remain operational till money is available,” he said.
On a national level, central trade unions in banking, insurance, public sector undertakings, transporters and unorganised sectors have called for a two-day nationwide strike from Wednesday to protest the central government’s alleged inaction on price rise, privatisation, outsourcing, violation of labour laws and various other issues.
