Damascus: Syrian rebels Wednesday freed 48 Iranians in exchange for over 2,000 regime detainees in deal with Damascus brokered by some regional countries, Xinhua reported.
As many as 2,130 prisoners, including two Turkish nationals, held by the Syrian government were involved in the swap deal. However, details surrounding the prisoners remained murky, as some say they were civilian activists while others say those were rebels.
The released Iranians had been abducted by Syrian militants in Damascus in August 2012. Iran said they were pilgrims, while the Syrian rebels alleged that they were Iranian military officials in Syria.
