4,200 inmates released in Belarus

Minsk: More than 4,200 convicts have been released in Belarus after an amnesty declared on the country’s independence day last year, the interior ministry said Monday.

The amnesty declared in July covered 18,737 inmates. Of them, 4,226 were released from custody and 6,957 had their sentences reduced by one year.

The ministry said hundreds of underage convicts, pregnant women and women with small children would be covered by the amnesty.

Meanwhle, a total of 7,544 convicts were denied amnesty.
