Malappuram: For the first time in the history of the state school arts festival, the inaugural ceremonies turned an occasion to commemorate the brave Mappilas of Malappuram, who waged a furious war against the British regime in 1921, by which they turned successful in resisting the British colonial desires in the region for almost six months.
For the first time the Kerala School is holding Kalolsavam at Malappuram, headquarter of the Malpppuram district. Another town Tirur, in Malppuram district had hoisted the state school arts festival twice [in 1992 and 2005] since the festival was first organised at Ernakulum in 1957.

The welcome song recited in the inaugural ceremony made references to the Mappila freedom fighter and Khilafat leader Variankunnathu Kunjammed Haji and the Wagon tragedy incident. The rally attended by almost 10000 artists and witnessed by thousands had several plots and tableaus featuring sequences from the freedom struggles undertaken by Mappilas of Malabar.
The union minister E Ahmed, who spoke at the inaugural ceremony too thankfully memorised the brave Mappila patriots who fought the British army with whatever limited means they had and their passion for the born land. The Indian Union Muslim League [IUML] state legislative members KNA Khader and Abdussamad Samadani who spoke after him too made references to the spiritual leader and freedom fighter Ali Musalyar and other Mappila rebels who sacrificed their lives for the freedom born land.
