Pakistani documentary selected for US film fest

Islamabad : Pakistani documentary “Outlawed in Pakistan” that tells the story of a teenager who accuses four men of gang-raping her is among the 15 short films selected for the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in the US.

The film was made by Habiba Nosheen and Hilke Schellmann. They were supported by the Pulitzer Center, the Daily Times reported.

“Outlawed in Pakistan” follows the story of Kainat Soomro, a teenager who accuses four men from her village of gang-raping her. She takes her case to court and confronts a deeply flawed criminal-justice system.

The film is being screened in the Documentary Short Film category in the festival held in Utah.

Nosheen is an award-winning journalist whose work highlights women’s issues while Schellmann is a video journalist working for the Wall Street Journal.

They previously worked together on an investigative documentary on surrogacy.
