New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) three-day open hearing of about 570 cases of atrocities against Scheduled Castes in Maharashtra began in Nagpur Monday, a statement from the apex human rights body said in Delhi.
NHRC chairperson Justice K.G. Balakrishnan said: “Despite so many social legislation and welfare schemes, the Scheduled Castes continue to face problems. The Commission, through its open hearings, is trying to reach out to them in different parts of the country and hear their complaints about violations of their rights.”
He said the Commission has no adversarial role to the functioning of state governments, and existed to aid in governance.
