Even as a section of students of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) here continued to demand the arrest of proctor Harish Vizra blaming him for the suicide of 29-year-old Mudassir Kamran, police issued a detailed statement, explaining the facts of the case.

Kamran, hailing from Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, hanged himself in his hostel room on the campus Saturday night and police initially said a quarrel with his roommate Vasim Salim caused him mental depression which drove him to take the extreme step.

Not satisfied with the police claim, the victim’s colleagues and student groups have been demanding action against the proctor and Osmania University police even booked him on the charge of abetment to suicide.

Police have now come out with all the “facts of the case” as the suicide sparked protests in Kashmir.

According to police, Vasim, a native of Pune, revealed that Kamran had made several physical advances by touching his body, kissing and hugging.

Annoyed over this, Vasim had shifted to another room. “The deceased was very possessive of Vasim and used to say that he is in love with him and cannot survive in the campus,” the police statement said.

“The deceased used to assault Vasim demanding that he stay with him only and not mingle with others. Three or four times he assaulted Vasim about which he had submitted representations to the university authorities,” police said.

Police said Kamran followed Vasim on the evening of March 1 and tried to throttle him. Later, Vasim along with two other students came to the police station and lodged a complaint.

The police inspector brought Kamran to the police station and counselled him in the presence of the complainant and two others.

Five students along with Vedasharan, dean campus development, came to the police station and requested the sub-inspectors to hand over Kamran to them and assured that the issue would be resolved in the university.

The students kept Kamran with them on the night of March 1 and were monitoring his movements the next day. On Saturday night around 9.20 p.m., one of the students H. Krishan went to Kamran’s room and knocked on the door. As there was no response, he peeped inside through the window to find Kamran’s body hanging from the ceiling fan.

A students organisation Saturday night lodged a complaint with the police, saying that Kamran was continuously harassed by Vizra who called him a ‘mentally disordered rascal’. They said the proctor sent Kamran to the police station for a petty reason instead of conducting an enquiry into the issue.

According to them, Kamran suffered the humiliation silently and was later found dead in his room.
