Chennai: The DMK-backed Tamil Eelam Supporter’s Organisation (TESO) Tuesday called a general strike in the state March 12 to urge the central government to support the anti-Sri Lanka resolution to be brought by the US in the UN human rights body.
At its meeting here, TESO resolved to hold a general strike March 12 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and requested all sections of the people to extend support for the strike.
Meanwhile, DMK president M. Karunanidhi, citing the protests held by various organisations in the state in support of Sri Lankan Tamils, told reporters: “The Indian government should look at this united voice and come forward to facilitate Sri Lankan Tamils to live.”
Expressing confidence at the success of US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka in the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Karunanidhi added that India should also cooperate for the success of the resolution.
He said representatives of TESO have met diplomats of several countries and explained the Sri Lankan situation.
The diplomats have also expressed their support, Karunanidhi said.
Meanwhile, thousands of cadres belonging DMK, VCK and other Tamil outfits and their leaders participated in a protest rally to picket the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission here under the TESO banner.
Police have taken into custody DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, other leaders and cadres and various organisations.
