Speaking at a seminar on ‘Women and Governance’ organised by the Indian World Foundation, NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma said: “We need to sensitise the community at large about gender sensitivity, particularly younger boys, and proper etiquette towards women. It is a must. It will help us bring down atrocities against the women and right value system.”

Sharma added that women activist and non-governmental organisation talk about women-related problems but many do not go to rural areas and work for women’s empowerment.

“Today, everybody talks of women empowerment but nothing much is being done. Women activist and NGOs need to focus on rural areas go to villages and work for their uplift,” Sharma added.

Giving out examples, Sharma said that rural women should be sensitised about khap panchayats.

“Khap panchyats have no constitutional powers. Rural women are scared of them and they abide by them. NGOs and other activists should sensitise them about their rights, not to be submissive and abide by the diktats, which deprives women empowerment,” she added.
