Kolkata : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday claimed that the next Lok Sabha polls would be held in the next two to three months instead of 2014 as scheduled, drawing ridicule from the opposition with the Congress wondering whether she has turned into an astrologer from a painter.
“As a railway minister I did almost all for Bengal. And for the small amount of work which is still to be done? I will also finish that. This is a matter of only two to three months as the next Lok Sabha elections will occur then,” Banerjee said, while speaking at an event here to mark International Women’s Day.
She hinted that in the next general elections, the Trinamool would secure enough seats and hold the railway portfolio in the government.
“We will then regain the railway ministry and complete all pending works. You don’t need to worry,” she said.
The Congress soon after took a dig at Banerjee.
“We all know that Mamata Banerjee is a good painter. But when did she start the job of an astrologer,” said senior Congress leader Manas Bhunia.
“She paints pictures, she sings at times… we know that she has several virtues. But I do not know since when she has become a political astrologer,” Bhunia said as media persons sought his reaction on Banerjee’s statement.
“Anyone can dream. However, the country’s general elections will be held as scheduled and following that a government led by the Congress will surely come to power,” he averred.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) also seized the opportunity to take potshots at the chief minister.
“We are eagerly waiting for this (for the elections and Banerjee’s success). But what I only want is she should not flee from Kolkata (after the polls),” said a sarcastic leader of opposition in the state assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra.
