Suu Kyi’s re-election as NLD chairperson took place during the first meeting of its newly-elected 120-member central committee, Xinhua reported.

The NLD’s first national congress in 25 years was attended by around 900 delegates.

The NLD, established in 1988, regained legal party registration in January 2012 following Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest in November 2010, following the country’s first multi-party general elections in 20 years.

In by-elections held in April 2012, the NLD overwhelmingly won 43 of 45 contested parliamentary seats, with Suu Kyi elected as member of the House of Representatives or lower house.
