338 arrested in Valley clashes after Afzal’s hanging

Srinagar : A total of 338 people who clashed with the security forces during protests against he execution of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, were arrested during the last one month but 242 have already been released on bail, Jammu and Kashmir Police said Monday.

“Police arrested 338 in last one month in Kashmir Valley out of whom 242 have been released on bail and 96 are in police/judicial custody,” said a police press statement here.

The statement said in the south Kashmir districts of Pulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Awantipora and Anantnag, 73 people were arrested out of whom 52 have been bailed out while 21 are in still custody.

“In north Kashmir districts of Baramulla, Sopore, Kupwara, Handwara and Bandipora, 158 people were detained out of whom 130 have been released while only 28 are in still custody, while in the central Kashmir districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal and Badgam, 107 were arrested out of whom 60 have been released and 47 are in custody,” the statement said.

Following Afzal Guru’s hanging in Delhi’s Tihar Jail Feb 9, stone-pelting mobs have clashed with the security forces. Three people died during these clashes while a youth was also killed allegedly in firing by security forces in north Kashmir’s Baramulla town March 5.

Senior police officers said that while exercising maximum restraint during mob control operations, more than 400 security men including those from the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been injured during this period.
