Guwahati: At least four Congress legislators Wednesday approached the privileges committee of the Assam assembly after it was alleged that they were involved in running business syndicates in the state.
Prominent farmers’ leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi who heads a non-political organisation – Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) – had a few days back addressed a press conference and alleged that the legislators had been involved with syndicates like fish, eggs and others.
Rekibuddin Ahmed (Chaygaon), Piyush Hazarika (Raha), Jayanta Malla Baruah (Nalbari) and Chandan Sarkar (Abhayapuri) have filed a written complaint against the farmers’ leader to the speaker of the Assam assembly.
“It is a breach of privilege. We are public representatives and are elected by people. This kind of allegation has no truth and it has tarnished our image in front of the people of our constituencies,” said Ahmed demanding that now either Gogoi has to prove the allegations or tender a public apology.
“It is very easy to make such an allegation against anyone,” Ahmed said and dared Gogoi to contest the election next time and shoulder the responsibility.
The speaker of the state assembly Pranab Gogoi had already forwarded the complaint to the privilege committee of the assembly for necessary action.
Although Gogoi was not available for comments, publicity secretary of the KMSS, Kamal Medhi said that they have not received any intimation or explanation over the issue.
Medhi, however, said that they have enough evidence to prove the four legislators are involved with the syndicates.
