Himachal seeks funds for transport system

New Delhi : Himachal Pradesh Tuesday sought special funds from the central government to strengthen the transport system in remote areas of the state.

Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) vice chairman Kewal Singh Pathania called on union Transport Minister C.P. Joshi here and requested him to sanction Rs.320 crore for transport facilities in remote and rural areas of teh state.

According to Himachal Pradesh’s proposal, Rs.105 crore is required for purchasing 700 buses for increasing bus frequency in remote areas and Rs.136 crore for setting up driving schools.

Official sources said the HRTC, with a fleet of over 1,900 buses, suffered losses of Rs.653 crore in 2011-12.

Its losses were Rs.572.79 crore up to March 31, 2011, while the figure stood at Rs.230.06 crore in 2010.
