Both the ruling party and opposition legislators had been demanding suspension of Suryawanshi, who was beaten up inside the legislature building Tuesday.

After regular disruption of proceedings leading to as many as five adjournments Monday, Home Minister R.R. Patil announced the suspension of the police official.

Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil also announced an inquiry into the incident which would be conducted by a committee headed by senior PWP legislator and former minister Ganpatrao Deshmukh.

Until the outcome of the inquiry, Suryawanshi would remain under suspension, the house was informed.

The announcement came in the wake of demands to revoke the suspension of five legislators, including two who were arrested last week and were granted bail Monday.

Of the five MLAs who were suspended till the end of the year, two legislators – Independent Kshitij Thakur and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s Ram Kadam – had surrendered before the police who later arrested them for assaulting Suryawanshi.
