Confirming the report KNP director N K Vasu said that the two carcasses were spotted by forest guards during a routine patrolling on Firday. The horns of both the rhinos were missing and this indicates it to be a case of poaching, Vasu said.

According to the forest officials, one of the carcasses were recovered from Borkata in Bagori forest range of the park while the other carcass was found near the Noloni anti-poaching camp in Agaratoli range.

It was suspected that the poachers might have killed the rhinos a few days back. Though the state government and forest department have adopted several measures to minimize such incidents, it seems that the poaching case has been increasing day by day which have raised eyebrows of various walks of life.

“The state forest department has miserably failed to protect the national park and its famed one horned rhinos. It’s indeed very unfortunate for the people of the state and the country as well,” said a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Guwahati reacting to this incident.

It may be mentioned that close to 130 one-horned rhinos have been killed by poachers in Assam in last ten years.
