New Delhi : BJP patriarch L.K. Advani Friday said the Congress contributed the most to his party’s win in the Lok Sabha polls as the results would have been different had scams during the erstwhile UPA government not been unearthed.
“Our party workers worked very hard in the general election, but I will not deny the fact that opposition parties have contributed the most in our victory,” Advani said referring to the Congress.
The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was ousted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won 282 seats in the Lok Sabha in polls. The Congress was reduced to 44 seats.
Former Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who went on to become the prime minister, was billed as the one who led his party to an impressive win.
“Had they not made grave mistakes, had people not seen big scams in the past 10 years, such results would not have come” Advani said after hoisting national flag at his official residence.
“The campaign under the leadership of Narendra Modi did contribute a lot, but the biggest contribution was made by our opposition parties. I said it then, and I say it now too,” the senior BJP leader said.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat had said people voted the BJP to power because they wanted change and not because of any individual.
