Journalist Shankar Prasad Choudhury is dead

    Kolkata: Veteran journalist Shankar Prasad Choudhury died at a nursing home here following protracted illness, doctors said. He was 79.

    Choudhury was suffering from kidney problems, besides other ailments for long, and died following multi-organ failure Monday, doctors said.

    Choudhury, who chose to join the profession in the late 1960s by giving up a more paying job, was an ace reporter in his time.

    He retired as chief reporter of the United News of India (UNI), Kolkata bureau in the mid-1990s.

    His usual beats were politics and police.

    He was also in the thick of things in the profession during the turbulent times of the Naxalite movement in the 1970s.

    A former president and secretary of the Kolkata Press Club, Choudhury was a well-connected person, having close links with many politicians, bureaucrats and other eminent people.

    Choudhury leaves behind his wife.
