The Hague : The Dutch police Thursday announced that the death of former health minister Els Borst was most likely caused by a crime.
The body of the 81-year-old politician was found in Bilthoven near her house Monday evening.
The Dutch forensic institute (NFI) Investigation immediately started a probe to find out if Borst died a natural death, from an accident or due to a crime.
“The investigation showed that the injuries found on the body led to her death and this was no natural death,” Xinhua quoted the police a saying.
“Based on further forensic examination in conjunction with the findings on the spot, the conclusion could be drawn that she most likely died due to a crime,” the police added.
The former minister might have faced a burglar in her house, who killed her.
Moreover, it might be a deliberate attack on the life of the politician and, therefore, murder could not yet be ruled out, according to the police.
Borst was a Dutch politician for the Democrats party D66, of which she was the leader in 1998. She served as minister of health, welfare and sport from 1994 to 2002.
She became well-known for implementing a law legalising euthanasia in the Netherlands under certain extraordinary conditions.
The investigation into her death by the public prosecutor and the police will continue.
