Thailand princess on India visit

New Delhi : Thailand Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, an eminent scholar of Sanskrit and Pali, is on an official visit to India.

The princess, who is visiting India Feb 23-28, has visited Nalanda and Bodh Gaya in Bihar and Kohima in Nagaland, before arriving in New Delhi.

She has visited India several times in the past.

Her visit is the highest level visit to India from Thailand after the two visits of the Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to India in 2012, and the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Thailand in 2013.

Among her engagements in Delhi are to call on President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President M. Hamid Ansari. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid will host lunch for the Thai royalty.

India and Thailand share a close and friendly comprehensive partnership based on civilisational exchanges and people-to-people contacts.

In recent years, there has been significant progress in bilateral cooperation in key areas of mutual interest, as India’s Look East Policy has been complemented by Thailand’s Look West Policy.

Both countries are regional partners linking South and Southeast Asia and cooperate closely in the ASEAN, East Asia Summit (EAS), BIMSTEC, Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC), Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) and other fora, said a ministry of external affairs statement.
