It said that Gandhi spoke strongly in favour of social, economic and political empowerment of women and noted that “unless women are respected and feel secure, India cannot be a super power”.

Gandhi, who will lead the Congress campaign for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, said he believed men and women were equal in capability, but the system often discriminates against women.

He said Congress government has done work to empower women and a lot more needs to be done.

Talking about his work with women’s Self Help Groups in Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi said he had learnt a lot from them and that they exemplify what women can achieve once empowered.

Women present at the meeting raised several issues pertaining to their lives, security, health and empowerment during the day-long discussion.

“They welcomed Rahul Gandhi’s push to increase the number of subsidised LPG cylinders from nine to 12 in a year,” the release said.
