Bangkok: The dispute that either Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) or the caretaker government has the right to postpone the election will be handled by the country’s constitutional court, media reports said Thursday.

The court’s public relations department Thursday said a ruling will be issued Friday, Xinhua quoted the Nation newspaper as saying in a report.

The poll panel has persistently urged Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s cabinet to reschedule the election from Feb 2 to May 4 to avoid anticipated unrest and violence at polling units, especially those in the capital and southern provinces.

The government has insisted that it has no authority to defer the election.

An advance voting is scheduled Sunday.
