UN military observer group redundant: Congress

New Delhi: The Congress Sunday said the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) has become redundant and has no purpose to serve any further in observing ceasefire violations on Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

The party noted that the mandate of UNMOGIP lapsed with the signing of the Shimla agreement in 1972 when India and Pakistan agreed to settle all differences bilaterally by peaceful dialogue.

“However, since the UN had continued to post personnel, India continued with courtesies provided as a cooperative member of the UN,” a party release said.

It said that after the Shimla accord, India never filed any complaints of ceasefire violations on the LoC to UNMOGIP since bilateral mechanisms were put in place.
