Go Green to be a good Muslim: JIH

By TCN News,

New Delhi: Every year, the World Environment Day provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the sorry state of our surroundings and come up with resolutions to make our planet greener and healthier to live in. Taking cue, the Mira Road chapter of Jamaate Islami Hind, among many other activities in this regard, held a special PPT lecture tonight to highlight the importance of a clean environment from the Islamic point of view.

The program started with the recitation of a passage from surah Rûm wherein Allah has enlisted some of His signs in nature.

Next, the audience was treated to a most interesting PPT presentation by the President of JIH Mira Road, Muhammad Abdul Qadeer, who used animated video clips and documentaries to expound upon important topics like Air, Water and Sound pollution. He also touched upon the need to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and enlisted a 6-point program to conserve the environment which was as follows:

1. Avoid plastic bags for shopping groceries and use jute/cloth bags instead.

2. Properly dispose/recycle Home Electrical Appliances.

3. Segregate dry and wet garbage.

4. Initiate Society clean-up programs.

5. Hold Public Awareness Programs at our respective societies.

6. Plant as many trees as possible at various places.

The speaker also emphasized upon the great importance Islam attaches to the environment, what with more than 300 Qur’anic ayaat and about 140 ahadees dealing with the topic. He recited some of these to send the message across.

Apart from this lecture, JIH Mira Road had, earlier this week, submitted a written request to the Municipal authorities to ban thin plastic bags, organized a students’ rally to create awareness among the masses, planted saplings on road dividers and also made it compulsory for its members to switch to Jute bags, which were made available at a nominal price after the program.
