Jamia to organize two-day seminar on human rights and governance

New Delhi: The Centre for West Asian Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize a two-day UGC-sponsored National Seminar on “Human Rights and Good Governance in India and West Asia” on November 25-26, 2014.

The seminar will provide a platform to the researchers and academic community to discuss and explain as to how through education, awareness and engagement on Human Rights issues, people can tend to peacefully coexist together, tolerate each other, tighten the justice system to be more effective, and how the governance system can get more democratized, efficient, accountable and keen to articulate the demands of its people.

The Inaugural Session of the seminar is scheduled to be held November 25, 2014 at 10.00 AM in the Conference Hall of FTK-Centre for Information Technology, Jamia Millia Islamia.

Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor of JMI shall Chair the Inaugural Session and he will also deliver Presidential Remarks on this occasion.

The Keynote Address shall be delivered by Prof. M.D. Nalapat, Director, Department of Geopolitics and International Relations, Manipal University, Karnataka. H.E. Gholam Reza Ansari, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to India and Seema Mustafa, Editor-in-Chief, The Citizen Newspaper shall be the Guests of Honour in the Inaugural Session.

The Conference will have a host of Parallel Sessions which will be attended by eminent academicians, research scholars and experts wherein papers will be presented and deliberated upon by them on the topics relevant to the theme of the Conference.

The seminar would mainly focus on following sub themes:

Ø External Powers and Humanitarian Interventions (Venue: IACC)
Ø Governance and Humanitarian Crisis in Iraq and Syria (Venue: AIS)
Ø Politics of Exclusion vs. Security Development (Venue: IACC)
Ø Migration and Issues of Governance (Venue: AIS)
Ø Arab Spring and Transformation of West Asia (Venue: IACC)

IACC=India Arab Culture Centre and AIS=Academy of International Studies

The Valedictory Session is scheduled to be held on November 26, 2014 at 05.30 PM in the Conference Hall of Imarate ibn Khaldun, India Arab Culture Centre (IACC), Jamia Millia Islamia.

Prof. Akhtarul Wasey, National Commissioner of Linguistic, Minorities & Former Dean of Humanities and Languages, Jamia Millia Islamia shall Chair the Valedictory Session and will address the audience.

Prof. M. Sadiq, former Chairperson, Centre for West Asian Studies, JNU, Prof. Girjesh Pant, former VC, Doon University & Ex-Dean, SIS, JNU, Prof. YSR Murthy, Registrar, O.P. Jindal Global University, Haryana, Prof. Dr. Jaspal Sigh Sandhu, Secretary, UGC shall be the Guests of Honour.

Hon’ble Justice Rajinder Sachar, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court shall deliver Valedictory Address on this occasion.
