New Delhi: A Supreme Court lawyer in his 60s is in a critical condition in a city hospital after he was attacked with a knife by two Nigerians inside his office here Wednesday evening, police said.
Mohammed Sahid Hussain was attacked around 7.15 p.m. inside his office in Jahanpanah Colony in Hauz Rani area of south Delhi.
Hussain, a resident of Hauz Rani who practices in the Supreme Court, was admitted to the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre of AIIMS.
At the time of the incident, Hussain was sitting alone in his office, police said.
“Both the accused fled the spot after committing the crime. A case has been registered and a hunt is on for the culprits,” a police official said.
Hearing his screams, residents reached Hussain’s office and found him in a pool of blood.
“Hussain was taken to the trauma centre after 7.30 p.m. He was stabbed in his neck. He is still in a critical condition. We are yet to ascertain the depth of the injury he received,” AIIMS spokesperson Amit Gupta told IANS.
Hussain, sources said, had caught the Nigerian duo while they were robbing someone’s house near his residence. The attack was probably to take revenge.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Prem Nath said: “It is too early to speak about the motive behind the attack as the culprits are absconding and the victim is not fit for a statement.”
After the incident, residents of Hauz Rani area staged a demonstration, demanding that the colony should be made free of Nigerians.
The protest ended after police officials assured them of proper action.
“We have deployed heavy police force in the area to maintain law and order,” said a police official.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi leader Somnath Bharti also reached the spot.
A gang war had taken place between two Nigerian groups in Khirki Extension area near Hauz Rani in the beginning of September that left one person severely injured.
