Guwahati: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release Rs 1,000 crore as immediate relief to flood-hit Assam.
The Chief Minister said the state would be able to make a correct assessment of the damages caused by the latest wave of floods that wreaked havoc mainly in Goalpara, Dhubri, Kamrup and Kamrup (metro) districts only after the flood waters recede.
“The extent of damages would be known only after the flood waters recede. The State needs at least Rs 1,000 crore for immediate relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people,” Gogi said.
Gogoi also apprised the central government about the loss of lives, extensive damages to roads, bridges, and houses and cropped land by the recent wave of floods causing huge losses to the state. The Chief Minister also informed the Prime Minister about the slew of steps initiated by the State Government to rescue the marooned people and to provide relief to the affected.
At least 36 persons have lost their lives in the recent floods till the filing of this report.
On Thursday, Assam’s prime regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) also slammed the central government for neglecting the state.
“The Narendra Modi led government central government has neglected Assam. They adopted different measures when floods occurred in Kashmir but when it comes to Assam, the central government neglected us,” said AGP president Atul Bora.
Meanwhile, the state government has taken the responsibility of the four siblings whose all family members were killed in the flood in Boko of Kamrup district.
A statement released by the state government, said that the government would take the responsibility of the kids of their study and further life.
CM Tarun Gogoi will also visit the flood affected the areas on Friday. Gogoi who will be accompanied by senior officials of the water resources and revenue & disaster management departments will make an aerial survey of the affected areas. Gogoi will visit the relief camps opened up by the district administration at Balbala, Agia and Bhalukdubi and interact with the camp inmates.
The Chief Minister will take stock of the flood situation with the officials of the district administration at a meeting at the Goalpara circuit house.
