Explosion outside Italian consulate in Cairo kills one

Cairo: At least one person was killed and six others were injured in a powerful explosion outside the Italian consulate in this Egyptian capital Cairo Saturday, an official saod.

According to health ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, one person died and six others, including a woman and her three children, were injured, Al Ahram reported.

According to a security officer, a car bomb caused the blast. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the explosion.

Italy will not be intimidated by the deadly bombing of its consulate in Cairo, Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said.

“Bombing against our consulate in Cairo, there are no Italian victims,” Gentiloni tweeted shortly after the attack.

“Our thoughts are with the people affected and with our personnel. Italy will not let itself be intimidated.”

The Italian consulate complex in downtown Cairo includes a cultural centre as well a social club.
