New Delhi : Rajya Sabha member T.N. Seema on Tuesday said a special sitting should be called to discuss the issue of violence against women in the country.
Raising the issue of an Indian student being denied admission in a German university due to the number of rape cases in India, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) member Seema said that Indian men are portrayed as rapists in the minds of foreigners.
“It is shameful that the image that has been created is that all Indian men are rapists. There is only one way to get rid of this image, to tell the world we don’t compromise on the issue of rape,” Seema said.
She pointed out that rate of conviction in rape case was less than 25 percent.
“It is because victims get hostile, there is not enough evidence or witness. But the victims are not to be blamed,” she said.
Even in the Uber case, the woman has said the lawyer is asking irrelevant questions… despite law, why is this happening? Is our police system and judiciary weak? There is no speedy justice, she added.
There should be a special sitting of parliament to discuss this, Seema said.
Several members supported her demand.
