Jeddah: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the world’s second largest inter-governmental organization urged the United Nations to consider a peacekeeping force for war-torn Syria and to immediately address Muslim world’s refugee problems.
Following an emergency meeting for its 57 member states on Sunday, the organisation said in a statement that the U.N. Security Council needs to create “a multi-dimensional UN peacekeeping operation in Syria as a prelude to restoring security and stability in the country”.
As of now more than four million Syrians have escaped the war-ravaged country and the migration from Syria has created a crisis in Europe. Germany alone has announced that it would receive 800,000 asylum-seekers from Syria and elsewhere this year.
The OIC meeting that was held here at the General Secretariat in Jeddah discussed the humanitarian crisis in Syria and recommended UN peace-keeping operation in Syria as a way of addressing the root cause of the refugee crisis.
The OIC, known as a collective voice of the Muslim world, also emphasized the necessity to find a political solution to Syria’s civil war, that erupted more than four years ago.
The organisation also pointed that more than half of its member states are not signatories to the UN Convention on Refugees and urged them to sign.
Blaming the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria as “the war crimes committed by the regime in Syria”, The OIC further urged all countries “to refrain from extending military support to the Assad regime”.
Applauding the countries that have allowed refugees from Syria, the OIC pleaded all nations, particularly OIC Member States, to receive Syrian refugees as a mark of Islamic compassion and solidarity.
It has also appealed the international community to enhance their contributions to the countries neighbouring Syria that have borne the greatest weight of refuges based on the principle of equitable burden-sharing.
“There is a responsibility upon the international community, not least OIC member states, to share the burden of alleviating the Syrian refugee crisis. At the moment that burden is placed disproportionately upon the neighbouring countries”, said OIC Secretary General, Iyad Ameen Madani the closing statement.
