More than 2,500 students and faculty members took training and spun the charkha for over 60 days at their college campus here.

The thread spun from this activity was used to create an 8×8 feet installation of Mahatma Gandhi which was unveiled by Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Kalraj Mishra at Khadi’s flagship store in Connaught Place here.

“Khadi is even more significant as it’s one of the prominent symbols of India’s Independence. It was our endeavour to educate our students about the significance of Khadi and I am happy that everyone spun the charkha with so much enthusiasm and has created such a beautiful tribute for Mahatma Gandhi,” Nandita Abraham, Pearl Academy CEO, said in a statement.

The students of Pearl Academy, adorned in Khadi, also carried out a Khadi Fashion March around the store with interesting placards that professed ‘Khadi is cool’.

“I am very happy that one of the leading fashion institutes of India has not only made an effort to train its students in spinning the charkha, but is also encouraging them to take pride in Khadi,” Vinai Kumar Saxena, Khadi and Village Industries Commission Chairman, said.

Pearl Academy also took the initiative to social networking platforms with hashtag #KhadiForever Campaign.
