Pehchan is an NGO which runs a coaching center in Jaitpura extention for school drop outs and sewing training center for needy women.

One of the trainee women Mubina’s husband Haseen received a call from the self-proclaimed Sub-inspector Sandip Malik posted at Lajpat Nagar police station. The SI allegedly threatened Haseen and asked him to come to the police station regarding a complaint.

Director of the NGO Pahchan Farida Khan informed Shabnam Hashmi, social activist and one of the trustees of the NGO, about the incident.

Following up on the case on her own, Shabnam Hashmi called the concerned SI and asked him about the case. In a recent press statement, Shabnam Hashmi has told that Sandip Malik hurled abuses at Shabnam Hashmi and used derogatery remarks to address her.

Shabnam Hashmi received the call again and this time she used a call recorder to record the talk. Sandip Malik threatened her that she will be killed in an encounter. When she tried to reasoned this threat, she was told that there is new law that empowers policemen to surround and kill those people who does not have Aadhaar card.

The call recording released by Hashmi states through Sandip Malik that police is running a Abhiyan of Ghero aur Maaro. In this, police may kill anybody who does not have Aadhaar number.

When activist asked Sandip Malik about the charges over which Haseen was called at the police station, he did not present any reason for the same.

Shabnam Hashmi said, “When any members of our organization recieves a call from the police, it is a general practice that we call the police asking about the reason of calling and send a lawyer with the person.”

Moreover, she said, “It is not about what the alleged policeman told me, it is about the government policy over Aadhaar. Is Aadhaar becoming really necessary to be alive?”

“Once again Aadhaar policy is in question, and government should answer this,” added Hashmi.

Interestingly, the Lajpat Nagar police station does not have sub-inspector named Sandip Malik, but the police station do have a Sandip Malik as a constable. When we called Sandip Malik for clarification on the issue, he refused to talk.
