BJP MP Parvesh Sharma made allegations that there are around 54 mosques that have been built illegally on government lands with help of AAP ( Aam admi party), in West Delhi which is his constituency.
Following Sharma’s allegations, another BJP MP from Delhi, Shri Manoj Tiwari, made similar allegations about other areas of Delhi.
The Delhi Minorities Commission formed a fact finding committee comprising 5 members to look into the issue of “illegal mushrooming of mosques on government land” last month.
The fact finding committee headed by Ovais Sultan Khan, was released on Thursday refuting the claims of the MP.
Zafarul Islam, the chairperson of the Delhi Minorities commission, during the release of the fact finding report titled, ” The Legal Status Of Religious Spaces In And Around West Delhi ” said to the press that the allegations of the MP are incorrect and the report he submitted to the LG are false.
Ovais Sultan, the chairperson of the fact finding committee, told the press, “that mosques are being targeted in the wake of upcoming elections in the national capital.” He said that people are trying to politicise the issue for the upcoming elections. And that there are several illegal constructions taking place in the national capital. But targetting only mosques is a kind of politics which should be avoided.
The fact finding committee apart from refuting the claims of the BJP MP has also given 8 recommendations to the Delhi Minorities commission.
Ovais Sultan Khan, chairman of the committee, said the report had recommended initiation of legal proceedings against Verma for making “false claims, spreading rumours to target a particular committee and creating communal disharmony” in the city. He said a complaint with the Lok Sabha’s Ethics Committee for violating the “oath of office” should also be filed.
The report will be sent to various authorities like Lt. Governor of Delhi.
