Beirut : Leaders of the majority in Parliament and of main opposition party in Lebanon expressed on Monday their readiness for reconciliation talks among rival factions, in line with the spirit of the Doha Agreement signed in May.
Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah hoped for Lebanese talks as soon as possible and urged all political groups to attend.
Even though national debate may include potentially conflicting issues regarding the weapons in the hands of the Shiite group, Nasrallah asserted that “Hizbullah is ready” in an appearance broadcast by Al-Manar TV channel.
The main opposition force is open to talks in a zero-hostility atmosphere with rival Sunni groups, mainly with Parliament majority and Future Movement leader Saad Hariri.
“Even if security situation demanded that Hariri and I cannot meet personally, this does not mean that other authorities from both parties cannot do it either,” said Nasrallah.
He also recognized the Future Movement’s representativity within the Sunni Muslim community, and said that “we are ready to cooperate with them, without any precondition.”
The Doha Agreement was signed in May this year by main Lebanese political sectors to put an end to the institutional void existing since November 2007 and the violence which claimed dozens of lives.
It called for the election of Michel Suleiman as President, a State policy for the government, a national dialogue and general elections in 2009.
