Chandigarh : A man was arrested in the early hours Monday for allegedly setting his wife on fire at their residence here following an altercation, the police said.
“Shubhwant Kaur, 35, a teacher in a private school, was admitted in the government medical college and hospital in Sector 32 Sunday evening with 12 percent burn injuries. We recorded her statement in which she accused her husband of setting her afire,” an investigating officer told IANS.
Shubhwant’s husband, Vikramjit Singh, who works in a multinational company in Lucknow, has been arrested after preliminary investigations. He has been booked for attempt to murder under section 307, the officer said.
However, the victim’s father-in-law Prithpal Singh, who is a retired defence official, and mother-in-law Harbhajan Kaur claimed that Shubhwant was burnt by accident.
One of the neighbours (who didn’t wish to be identified) said she heard Shubhwant’s shrieks when she (the neighbour) went to drop the victim’s children to her (Shubhwant’s) house. “Shubhwant told me that her husband had set her on fire,” she added.
Another neighbour said that the couple had an estranged relation.
Shubhwant’s father who reached Chandigarh from Ludhiana town in Punjab Sunday night said his daughter’s in-laws on one pretext or the other have been harassing his daughter. She was married in 1995 and has two sons Abhijit, 11 and Akhil, 9.
