Shorabuddin killing: filing of charges postponed

Ahmedabad : The Ahmedabad sessions court Wednesday postponed to Sep 24 the framing of charges against 14 police officials, including suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) D.G. Vanzara, who are accused in the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake shootout.

Additional principal sessions judge P.B. Desai postponed as Special Public Prosecutor V.P. Atre, said to be indisposed, could not be present in the court.

Inspector Abdul Rehman, among the accused, sought 10-day bail from the court for attending a marriage in his family. The court decided to consider his application at the next hearing, Sep 24.

Sheikh was killed in a staged shootout by the Gujarat Police Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) here Nov 26, 2005. His wife Kauser Bi was also subsequently killed and her body disposed of.

The ATS had claimed he was a terrorist but his turned out to be a petty criminal. his brother’s plea in the Supreme Court has led to the investigation into the shootout.

Indian Police Service (IPS) officers Vanzara and Dinesh M.N. are the prime accused in the killing of Sheikh while deputy superintendent of police Narendra K. Amin is charged with killing Kauser Bi.

Though Amin and Dinesh were granted bail by the Sessions Court in October last year, the Gujarat High Court cancelled it Jan 25.
