Kolkata : A city court Monday issued summons to seven, including three police officers, accused in the Rizwanur Rahman death case asking them to appear before it Oct 27.
The summons were issued to Rizwanur’s father-in-law industrialist Ashok Todi, ex deputy commissioner of city police Ajoy Kumar, assistant commissioner Sukanti Chakraborty and sub-inspector Krishnendu Das.
Others summoned were Ashok Todi’s brother Pradip, their relative Anil Saraogi and Pappu, a family friend of the Rahmans.
The summons were issued late Monday after metropolitan magistrate Anupam Maity took cognisance of a chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) earlier in the day.
The CBI, probing the sensational case following a Calcutta High Court order, in a report had stated that Rizwanur committed suicide, and sought to proceed against the seven on various charges for abetting it, criminal intimidation and conspiracy.
Rizwanur, a 30-year-old graphic designer working with a multimedia firm, was found dead Sep 21 last year near railway tracks at Patipukur near Dum Dum, barely a month after marrying Hindu girl Priyanka Todi, daughter of Ashok Todi.
The death unleashed an unprecedented outcry for justice in civil society, following allegations that the three police officers chargesheeted Monday, as also Deputy Commissioner (headquarters) Gyanwant Singh had pressurised Rizwanur to part with Priyanka at the behest of her father.
Under attack for “shielding” the police officers, the Left front government removed the city police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee and four other officers for their alleged role in Rizwanur’s death.
