India ranked 23 among Davis Cup nations

By IANS,

London : India might have lost their World Group play-off tie against Romania, but it can draw solace from the fact that they are placed higher in the Davis Cup rankings than countries which boast of a tennis culture.

India is placed 23rd in the new rankings issued Tuesday and are a rung above Great Britain who went down three places to 24.

India lost an opportunity to return to the World Group after a decade, losing 4-1 to Romania last week.

Korea is the highest placed Asian country at 20. Brazil and Peru are also above Britain in the rankings.

Britain were, however, are among the seeded countries when the draw is made Tuesday for next season’s European and African zonal division. And so will India be as they are back to the Asia-Oceania zonal competition.

The draw in Madrid could go some way in determining whether Andy Murray has any enthusiasm for the Davis Cup, after the weekend’s events at Wimbledon, where Britain lost a World Group play-off tie to Austria.

As one of the seeds, Britain are guaranteed to have a bye through the first round of zonal ties, to be played in March, and will not feature until the second round, when they will face one of Italy, Macedonia, Poland, South Africa and Ukraine. So Britain only need to win one tie to work their way back to a World Group play-off.
