New Delhi : A moderate earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale jolted Uttarakhand and parts of north India early Monday.
There were no reports of loss of life and property from the quake that took place at 4.32 a.m., with its epicentre in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district.
The tremors were also felt in New Delhi, Meerut and Haridwar. Many in the national capital were jolted out of their beds.
"The area (Uttarkashi) falls under the seismic zone five, which is most prone to earthquakes. Barring minor cracks in some houses, we have not received reports of much loss of life and property," said A.K. Shukla, seismologist at the Indian Meteorology Department.
The last major quake in Uttarkashi region in October 1991 devastated thousands of homes and killed nearly 800 people.
