Charlton needed to win their final two games to have any chance of staying up, but fell behind of Dimitar Berbatov after seven minutes Monday.

Jermain Defoe added a second in injury-time to confirm their fate.

"You end up where you end up and we haven't been good enough," Charlton manager Alan Pardew said.

Despite rumours of wholesale departures, Pardue said 90 percent of the squad would stay. "The key now is to bounce back next season," he said, adding he had no intention of leaving.

The win lifts Tottenham into sixth, in prime position to clinch UEFA Cup qualification.
