Palestinian Authority chief negotiator Saeb Erakat told reporters the meeting was held as part of mutual cooperation and coordination between both countries at the highest levels, namely on the Middle East peace process.

He indicated the Atab states, at the summit held in Syria last March, had adopted the Yemeni initiative for inter-Palestinian conciliation.

Erakat said Abbas will seek Al-Assad’s support to push the Palestinian reconciliation negotiations forward to tackle the internal division, noting “The talks’ failure will be a burden nobody can bear.” In response to a question about Palestinian internal issues and reconciliation efforts called by the Egyptian leadership, he said that Egypt is now exerting intensive efforts on this matter, noting that a statement from Cairo in this regard will be published soon, and thereafter, there will be a comprehensive meeting with all Palestinian parties involved.
