New Delhi : Delhi's Blueline buses continued their "killer" run, claiming one more life Saturday, while a grievously injured victim succumbed to his injuries.
A 25-year-old man, Rajeev, was killed at around 8 a.m. when he came under the wheels of a Blueline while alighting at Azadpur area in north Delhi. The bus was plying on route number 181 between Zhangir Puri and Hazarat Nizamuddin.
Rajeev was the 66th victim of Blueline buses this year.
Police said Rajeev was crushed under the rear wheels of the bus after the driver suddenly accelerated. He was rushed to the nearby Babu Jagjeevan Ram Hospital but was later referred to the Hindu Rao Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, the bus driver Rajesh, 43, has been arrested.
On Friday evening, a Blueline bus, plying between Mori Gate and Kapashera border, crushed a cyclist Daya Ram near Ansal Bhawan in the Delhi Gate area.
He was admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries soon after.
A resident of Preet Vihar, Daya Ram used to travel on his bicycle to Paharganj every day. He worked as a delivery boy at B. Jain Publishing Private Ltd. for the last eight years.
Daya Ram is survived by his father Badlu Ram, his wife and two children. He was the only earning member of his family.
Police said the bus driver Zile Singh was arrested and a case of negligence and rash driving registered against him.
The driver maintained that Daya Ram had suddenly emerged in front of the bus. "I tried to apply the emergency brakes, but couldn't. It was definitely not my mistake."
Bluelines, with a fleet of 4,200, have been under attack in recent weeks for speeding and reckless driving that has caused the death of 66 people and injured over 150 so far this year.
In July, 11 deaths have been caused by Bluelines.
