Kolkata : West Bengal Monday decided to deploy police commandos at major railway stations across the state in the wake of the attacks at 10 locations in Mumbai, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and two super-luxury hotels.
After a high-level meeting led by state Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty and police top brass, it was decided that the state police commandos would now be pressed into service at major railways stations like Howrah, Sealdah, Kharagpur and New Jalpaiguri.
“We took this decision in a meeting today. We’ve already deployed state police commandos at Howrah and Sealdah railway stations – both major railheads in eastern India – to keep a close watch on the security situation,” West Bengal Additional Director General of Police (Railways) Dilip Mitra said at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings.
He said commandos would also be deployed at Kharagpur and NJP railway stations in phases.
“This initiative has been taken to strengthen the security surveillance at vital railway terminals across the state,” Mitra added.
The meeting was also attended by state Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia and Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty.
The police commissioner earlier said that following the Mumbai terror strikes Kolkata Police would take all necessary steps to tighten security in the state capital.
