The week before, the Serb is due to star at a special event in Hong Kong along with Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, where her appearance is assured.

Jankovic’s life changed as she ended the 2008 season on the top ranking spot and demands on her time are obviously growing. Sydney officials are still keen to have her and would happily offer a late entry to the tournament starting January 11.

“Players often end up re-arranging their schedules a number of times and in this instance,” said tournament director Craig Watson. “Jelena has not finalised her plans for 2009 yet.

“She is always welcome in Sydney having played some outstanding tennis here. If Jelena does decide that she would like to play in Sydney, then we would certainly consider her for a wildcard.”

Jankovic has played Sydney four times, her best performance a 2007 final against now-retired Belgian Kim Clijsters.
