Gandhinagar : The Gujarat government Thursday once again urged the central government to clear a stringent anti-terror law for the state and called for a Coastal Security Authority for India’s western region to prevent a repeat of the terrorist strike in Mumbai.
“This (Nov 26) terror strike should be an eye-opener as in future there could be more such brazen strikes if proper lessons are not learnt,” the state cabinet said in its resolution after its weekly meeting here.
“The GUJCOC (Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Act) that is pending should be cleared by the centre post-haste. Unless there are exemplary provisions in the law, terrorists are unlikely to be deterred,” it said.
The bill, passed by the state assmebly, has been pending before the central govenrment, awaiting the president’s assent.
The state cabinet said a Coastal Security Authority comprising the states of Western coastal region should be set up as terrorists had now begun taking sea routes.
Gujarat shares the country’s western coastline with Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Union Territories of Lakshadweep islands, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The 10 terrorists, who struck Mumbai and killed 172 people, had come from Karachi using a sea route, touching Gujarat’s coast near Okha, according to investigators.
