A police spokesman said the blast took place at a crowded weekly market near Kheroni village in Karbi Anglong district, about 290 km east of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.

“The explosion took place just on the edge of the market and so the casualty figure was not very high,” a police official said.

There were two children among those injured. Police blamed the outlawed Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) for the explosion.

The KLNLF obeserved its foundation day Saturday. The rebel group had claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s train bombing in Diphu that killed three people and wounded 30.

In a separate incident in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar district, soldiers killed three militants of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

“The three ULFA militants were gunnded down in three separate encounters (gunfights), while one was apprehended,” an army commander said.

Security forces also recovered arms and ammunition from the dead rebels.
